Untitled Document | Postgraduate Curriculum Available: Residency: Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (RCPS(C)) Accredited Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology The University of Toronto offers one of only four Royal College accredited post-graduate training programs in Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology in Canada and currently the only active one. This 2-year training program was most recently successfully evaluated by the RCPS(C) evaluation team in April 2007. Usually, two training positions are funded every year by the Ministry of Health and Long-term Care of Ontario. (Some conditions apply.) This program is open to post-graduate trainees at Canadian Universities from the following disciplines: Anesthesia, Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics and Psychiatry. Graduates of this 2 year program are eligible for training assessment by the RCPS(C) and may challenge the Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology Certification Examination to be given every second year starting in 2008. Successful graduates are also eligible for The American Board of Clinical Pharmacology examination. Application Process Link Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Training Requirements University of Toronto Fellowship in Clinical Pharmacology and/or Toxicology The Division of Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Toronto consists of multiple full service programs and is able to offer a Certificate of Special Competence to interested post-graduate trainees from medical specialities completing their training at Canadian or foreign universities. This fellowship program may be tailored to the individual learning needs of the successful applicant in consultation with the Program Director and a supervisor and will be a combination of clinical and research activities. Fellowship funding depends on candidates, and must be arranged in advance through the supervisor. The duration of such a training program is usually 2 years or more. Applicants to the clinical program must be eligible for an educational license from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. CPSO licensing information Application Process As the academic year is traditionally from July 1st to June 30th, applications are both the RCPS(C) and the University of Toronto Certificate of Special Competence in Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology are due on September 20th of the year preceding the date of entry. Exceptions may be made for those entering a shortened clinical or research training program. Candidates from emergency medicine, internal medicine and pediatrics are accepted into their 4th postgraduate year and beyond and from anesthesia and psychiatry into their 5th postgraduate year and beyond as per the RCPS(C). Training may be able to be taken concurrently. Candidates successful in obtaining an interview will be contacted by the Committee within two weeks of the application deadline. All interviews will be conducted before October 30th of the year preceding the date of entry and will be arranged at a mutually convenient time. At least one referee must be from a current and direct supervisor, aware of your clinical abilities and, if in training, another from your current program director. The Program Objectives, Description and Curriculum The resident/fellow will train to become a consultant with a broad knowledge of human pharmacology, therapeutics and toxicology, usually with special expertise in a specific area. The resident must be involved with research projects (patient-based, translational, or basic) in the Division. The resident is also expected to become an effective communicator and educator. During the 2 years, the program provides the resident with core training opportunities for the discipline. However, the resident’s career goals may necessitate extra years of training. The breadth of many career possibilities in Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology (academic institutions, regulatory agencies, private practice, pharmaceutical industries, etc.) requires the resident and supervisor to clearly identify the future career goals of the resident and re-evaluate them as the training progresses. One of the characteristics of the program is its flexibility in the training. Nevertheless, the explicit individualized training plan regarding practice, research, and teaching has to be developed, clearly established, and agreed to by the resident, supervisor, and Program Director before the tenure starts. The trainee is encouraged to come forward with his/her own research ideas. It is important to remember the breadth and depth of research done by faculty members in the Division, which ranges from basic science to patient-based, and further to the area of pharmacoepidemiology and pharmacoeconomics.
