Clinical Pharmacology (Adult): Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, 1 month

This elective is open to Internal Medicine trainees.  The resident will be responsible for the initial assessment of inpatient, outpatient, and Emergency Department consultations in clinical pharmacology and toxicology, and will gain experience in the assessment of drug allergy, adverse drug reactions, therapeutic drug monitoring, and the management of poisoned patients.  Didactic teaching sessions, case-based rounds, Drug Safety Clinic, and Poison Centre experience will be available during the elective.

Clinical Pharmacology (Pediatric and Maternal Fetal): Hospital for Sick Children, 1 month

This elective is open to interested trainees from interested disciplines including but not restricted to Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology and Pediatrics. The resident will be responsible for bedside and outpatient consultations in pediatric pharmacology, toxicology and palliative care, in the Reproductive Toxicology Clinic and the daily telephone counseling service (MotheRisk) and the Drug Allergy, Reaction and Toxicology Clinic (DART). The resident will have the opportunity to present cases to responsible Staff physicians and at case rounds and to do more in-depth literature reviews and research in particular drugs and toxins. The elective is complemented by a multitude of didactic learning sessions in the areas above as well as research design and at the Ontario Poison Centre.

Clinical Pharmacology (Adult): Toronto Rehabilitation Institute, 1 month

This elective is open to Internal Medicine and other interested trainees.  The resident will participate in activities of the Cardiac Rehab and Secondary Prevention Program at the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute to learn the principles of cardiac prevention and exercise rehabilitation.

Clinical Toxicology: Ontario Poison Centre, 1 month

This elective is open to senior Emergency Medicine (Adult and Pediatric), Internal Medicine, Critical Care and other interested residents. The resident will be responsible for attendance in the Ontario Poison Centre, on-call back-up to Specialists in Poison Information for telephone consultations and occasional bedside consultations, and rounds presentations. Other didactic learning opportunities will be available depending on the primary specialty of the elective resident.
